Clara Barton was born December 25, 1821. She spent most of her life helping others in volunteer work and with her other establishments. She became a teacher at age 15. She opened a public school in New Jersey.  She was nicknamed the Angel of the Battlefield because of her work in the civil war for her dedication to her profession. President Lincoln commissioned her to search for lost prisoners of the war. In the beginning of the war she stood on the side lines distributing supplies for the Union. Not content with this position she began to serve as an independent nurse in the first civil war battle. She died on April 12, 1912.
